Curriculum
Our approach to the New Town curriculum
The rationale for the curriculum is based on the school’s shared vision:
‘Nurturing Brilliance, Inspiring Ambition’
Through the curriculum, we aim to provide each pupil with the opportunity to become a life-long learner by nurturing pupils’ individuality and creativity, guiding pupils’ learning and challenging pupils to think independently through the shared involvement of staff, parents and the wider community.
Aims for curriculum design
- To nurture a life-long passion for learning
- To ensure everyone reaches his/her full potential
- To encourage creative, independent thinking
- To inspire a love of reading
- To meet the needs of individual children
- To increase self-esteem
- To equip children for the ever-changing challenges of the 21st Century
- To provide stability and a safe place to learn in
- To develop a sense of community and citizenship
Units of work are planned using the Framework of the National Curriculum. Reading is prioritised across the school day. There is also an expectation that reading is planned across other curriculum subjects to celebrate the diversity of different reading genre and to enable pupils to access the full curriculum offer. The ethos behind our whole curriculum is underpinned by our school values; love and kindness, tolerance and inclusivity, honesty and trust and determination and resilience.
The delivery of our curriculum will ensure that the way in which issues are taught does not subject individual pupils to discrimination, in line with the Equality Acts of 2010 and 2014, and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. We aim to encourage healthy debate and discussion around issues of diversity, tolerance and the differences we all possess, but will always do this in a sensitive and respectful manner.
